O TOEFL é atualmente oferecido em duas forma: internet-based e paper-based. O paper-based TOEFL (PBT) confere um escore que varia de 310 a 670, o internet-based (iBT) confere um escore de 0 a 120. Ambos têm validade de apenas 2 anos. Isto faz sentido, uma vez que a habilidade em língua estrangeira pode se alterar significativamente num período de dois anos.
